Who is Emilio?

Emilio began as a very personal project for Mattia Montanari — a way to honour the land he grew up in and the flavours that shaped his life in Emilia-Romagna. Mattia is from Levizzano Rangone, right in the heart of Lambrusco country. His earliest memories are tied to these hills: helping his grandmother pick grapes for traditional balsamic vinegar, long family lunches, and tasting his first sip of wine over a plate of homemade lasagna. Nothing fancy, just everyday life rooted in the land, the seasons, and the work of local hands.

In 2005, at only 21 years old, he began making wine himself. He started with the grape he knew best — Lambrusco Grasparossa — and gradually added other native varieties: Grecchetto Gentile (for Pignoletto), Malbo Gentile, and more.

Each new wine reflected another part of Emilia he wanted to share. 

The idea for Emilio came later, born from a simple question:

How do you tell the whole story of Emilia-Romagna in one collection of wines?

Mattia gained inspiration and followed the path of the Via Emilia, the ancient Roman road that runs from Rimini to Piacenza, cutting across the region from sea to mountains. Along that road he chose small, characterful estates, each representing a different piece of Emilia-Romagna’s landscape and soul.

This journey became Emilio — a name that ties everything together. A way to bottle not just wine, but the places, memories, and traditions that shaped Mattia’s life. Emilio is his tribute to Emilia-Romagna, shared with anyone who wants to experience it.

Emilio Team

The Emilio team is made up of four individuals connected by their shared love of Emilia-Romagna.
Mattia, our CEO, began producing Lambrusco at 21 and hasn't stopped since.
Dalila was born and raised in Modena while Kayleigh originally from the UK has chosen Modena as her home of 20 years.
Valentina is the team creative, gaining inspiration from the countryside of Modena where she grew up.
